Finding Space

    next image

This house was a post-war suburban 1.5 story with a later family room addition in back. The goal of the project was to open up the existing kitchen and make it function larger than it was without adding anything to the footprint. This was accomplished both perceptually and also through claiming some real square footage. The extra "real" space was found by redirecting traffic to the lower stair through the front room, thus making the kitchen a destination instead of a thoroughfare, and adding a whole corner of cabinet space (a lot in a small kitchen!)
