Cottage Farmhouse

This client approached us with a beautiful piece of property — a clearing in a wooded section of her parents 40 acre tree farm. Although they had no immediate plans to build, they were interested in investing in the planning stages for a small home with some very unique programmatic spaces.
Having lived for a time in England, they wanted a stylistic nod to the English "cottage", as well as space for a small pub, a library, and a smoking porch, all within quite a tight target square footage. It was exciting to work with them to define the important pieces of what it meant to be a "cottage" — in this case, using materials from the site (the fieldstone), having low eaves and thick walls, and using rough-cut timbers to define the ceiling planes of the interior spaces became key driving forces behind the design.
